The Grapevine: Design & Grow garden workshop, winter market, plumbing Q&A

Design Grow Gardening Workshop

The Sedgwick County Extension and master gardeners always offer one day of gardening education in the dead of winter, when we most need to get our minds off the cold, and when we also have some time to plan for planting. This year, the day will take the form of a Design Grow Gardening Workshop, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Extension Center at 21st and Ridge Road.

Topics will include landscape design made simple, best trees and shrubs, your gardening personality, starting plants from seeds, vegetable gardening, and raised bed gardening, presented by K-State experts and master gardeners. The cost is $15 before Jan. 22 and $25 after. Register online at sedgwick.ksu.edu; click on the list of events to the right.

Winter market next weekend

The Kansas Grown Farmers Market will have an indoor market from 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 9 at the Extension Center, 21st and Ridge Road. More than 50 farmers and crafters will be there. Among the food items will be meats, spinach, lettuce, herbs, salsa, jams, jellies and baked items. Other items will include hand-made soap, candles, skin-care products, knitted items, wood crafts and leather goods. Admission is free.

Plumbing QA

Q: Our new bathroom is large, and my husband wants to install a double-vanity unit. But I want to install two side-by-side pedestal sinks. He says that we’ll lose storage and counter space and that installing two separate sinks can be expensive. Any ideas on how to settle this plumbing disagreement?

A: Master Contractor/Plumber Ed Del Grande answers: Have your contractor price up both to see if there’s a substantial price difference between installing two pedestal sinks over a double vanity. If cost is not the main concern, then there may be another way to work this out.

Pedestal sinks are available with extra-wide flat edges around the sink bowl, and that can help you get back some counter space, especially since you plan to install the sinks next to each other.

As far as storage, a closet or storage unit should work fine since you have a large bathroom area.

Finally, pedestal sinks can have a dramatic design impact when installed side by side, so tell him I’m on your side.
