Challenge accepted: South Whidbey students compete for best business

Alec Chinnery, a 17-year-old junior at South Whidbey High School, may be better suited than most to help his team win the first-ever student entrepreneur challenge.

Sponsored by the Island County Economic Development Council, the competition pits nine teams of between three and five students against each other, and includes writing a business plan, recruiting investors, and selling a product or offering sevices for one week. The competition began on Monday and will conclude on Nov. 22.

The team with the highest profit at the end of the week will receive a scholarship of $250.

Because Chinnery already owns his own landscaping business, Chinnery Landscaping Services in Langley, Chinnery has a profitable base to work from. South Whidbey’s team includes Shannon Lux, Jake Delaney and Tesla Dussault. The group is being mentored by Traci Winn, a personal and commercial lines agent at Porter Whidbey Insurance.

Chinnery has already pledged that if his team wins, 30 percent of the scholarship money will be donated to the South Whidbey High School band. Chinnery plays the French horn and trumpet for the band.

“Alec has been the controlling force I would say,” Winn said. “He’s just a really amazing kid. He’s going to go a long way in life.”

The competing teams include seven students from Oak Harbor, one from Camano, and one from South Whidbey. Ideas from the teams range from landscaping, selling candy or candles, baking and catering to photographing senior portraits.

Winn said her roles as a mentor include helping keep the students on track with their goals and ensuring that their ideas are not too “outlandish.”

“I told them one really big thing is to make sure you’re calling your customers and thinking outside the box,” Winn said.

Because business is generally slow during the winter for landscapers, Winn suggested that the team make the sales now, and then follow-up on barking the customers’ landscapes later in the year.

“If this goes well, they can actually work with the EDC and have a viable business to carry on after this, which is really exciting to them,” Winn said.

The challenge’s director, Sami Postma, came up with the idea in an effort to become more involved with students at local high schools.

“Those who have come from here and want to stay here are going to create businesses that are going to help the community more than somebody else,” Postma said. “In trying to think of ways that we could get the kids involved in business while still having fun with it, I started coming up with this competition where they actually get to run their own business for a while.”

Chinnery said he started his business because it was difficult finding work over the summertime. He also prefers to be his own boss.

“I’m more of the kind of guy who likes to lead himself,” Chinnery said. “I don’t like taking orders from somebody necessarily.”

Operating out of his 1989 Ford Bronco, Chinnery usually attaches a trailer to carry all his supplies, which includes a riding lawnmower, two push mowers, two weed whackers, a chainsaw and hedge trimmers.

“It’s just gotten to this point where it’s a really successful company,” Chinnery said.

Chinnery hopes to expand his company if his group wins, which may include new equipment, a new trailer, and possibly a new truck.

Christmas comes early at Rockledge, Cocoa homes

The ladies of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club are experts at discovering outstanding homes to showcase during their annual fundraising pilgrimage through Central Brevard’s most unique neighborhoods.

With the guidance of real estate agent and garden club member Margret Cornell, the club selected a study in elegance for “Christmas on the River,” as the Wednesday event has been named.

As with all of the residences the club spotlights, the two homes in the 2015 tour lack for nothing. Want killer river views? Take in the scenery. Like dramatic spaces? It’s inside. Enjoy majestic oaks and meticulous landscaping? Got it.

These are homes that have everything, but the Cocoa and Rockledge estates in the tour are nevertheless singular.

“They are each very different,” said club member Evelyn Fraley. “One is very traditional and the other is more contemporary.”

One thing the two houses will share is an abundance of holiday decorations designed to give visitors an early infusion of holiday spirit.

“The homeowners are going out of their way to get their houses decked out for the holidays,” said Fraley.

At Jim and Sara Milburn’s Cocoa home by the river, the Christmas decorations are going up at a fast clip. The 20-foot star Jim places atop the boat house at the end of the 200-foot dock can be seen from both S.R. 520 and 528.

“It takes us about three weeks to put all the decorations, but it’s worth it, because people come from all over to see the house,” said Jim.

Although not even 40 years old, the house is a Cocoa landmark, thanks to its 25-foot-wide, 60-foot-long swimming pool. Before the house existed, the swimming pool was there as an unofficial community pool.

“If you talk to anyone who has lived in Cocoa for a long time, they’ll tell you they learned to swim in that pool because the owner let everyone use it,” said Jim.

The pool remains the jewel in the crown of the 6,000-plus-square-foot, five-bedroom, five and half-bath house. Because the house was built on one of the highest spots in the area, its original owner was able to incorporate that rara avis of amenities in a Florida house: a basement.

But this is no ordinary basement. Mimicking the deck of a ship, the space, used as a game room by the Milburns, includes wall-to-wall murals of passengers strolling aboard an imaginary luxury liner. Muralists Thom Greene and Pearl Ollie even incorporated the Milburns into the picture. While the ship’s deck is fantasy, the porthole windows are very real and afford visitors an underwater view of the pool.

After the Milburns bought the house 17 years ago, they embarked on a voyage of renovation that included changing the style of the house from its original English Tudor look to a traditional colonial. Among the projects in the extreme makeover, the front door was replaced with a historic one the Milburns saved from the Brevard Hotel, a long ago victim of demolition. At the time they purchased the property, few trees were there, so the Milburns planted oaks, queen and fan palms, and these days the home is nestled among the greenery.

To add frosting on the cake, the Spade and Trowel Garden Club will also include a mini-festival as part of the home tour. With an emphasis on holiday shopping, the vendor village that sets up shop at each home will offer gift ideas that range from sea bean jewelry to orchids. Christmas decorations handmade by club members will be for sale, as will baked goods.

“They sell like hotcakes,” said Fraley.

Add music and refreshments and guests will have the opportunity to get over the Wednesday hump in fine style. Yes, the event is on a Wednesday, and the club planned it that way, because Wednesdays are the club’s meeting days.

“We tried it on a Saturday and we found out we do just as well on a Wednesday because we don’t have to compete with other happenings,” said Fraley, who expects 700 visitors for this year’s tour.

But Christmas on the River is about much more than just spending a pleasant afternoon inside stunning residences. The event raises thousands to benefit club charities, including Candlelighters of Brevard, which helps families of children with cancer; Walk on Water Horse Ministry for children with special needs and Space Coast Center for Women and Children, plus local historical and civic beautification projects.

“We work hard to help the community,” said Fraley.

Master Gardener winter class registration open now

TILLAMOOK, Ore. – If you want to become a better gardener by applying the latest scientific methods, consider learning from the experts and becoming a Master Gardener this winter.

Oregon State University’s Tillamook County Extension Service office will offer weekly Master Gardener classes on Thursdays, beginning Jan. 7 and continuing for 12 weeks. Each class will feature faculty and local gardening experts teaching students about soils, propagation, pruning, landscape and garden planning and design, suitable plants for coastal gardening and landscaping, pest and disease control, weed management, orchards, raised beds and other topics of interest to local gardeners.

Students will experience a variety of hands on and interactive training, including greenhouse techniques at the local Master Gardeners’ learning garden, assisted by local Master Gardeners and OSU staff. The program also requires 60 hours of community service work in the first year of training, including advising the public during Master Gardener office hours.

“By taking the Master Gardener classes, and in helping others, our Master Gardener apprentices develop their own expertise and abilities to better serve the community,” said local OSU Extension agent Joy Jones. “This is a great way to help yourself and others enjoy their gardens using current scientific knowledge.”

Tuition is $120 and includes the comprehensive “Sustainable Gardening” book, as well as access to a wide range of printed and online resources, and experienced professional instructors.

For those who do not have the time or desire to volunteer, they too may take the training and receive a certificate of horticulture. The fee for this option is $240.

Call the Extension Service office at 503-842-3433 or visit at 2204 Fourth Street, Tillamook, for more information. In addition, registration information can be found online.

Classes will be held at the main Tillamook Bay Community College campus, in Tillamook.

BILLERICA — It’s that time of the year to honor a youth, a woman, a company and a nonprofit in town.

Chris Burns, Kay Johnson, EMD Serono and The Sunshine Gals will be honored Thursday at the Boys Girls Club of Greater Billerica’s annual dinner.

“It’s an opportunity to recognize our honorees for their great work, while also giving people a chance to see what’s going on at the club,” said Roy Nagy, the club’s executive director. “People will get to talk to the kids, and it’s an opportunity to get more in touch with the club.”

Chris Burns, named Youth of the Year, has been a club member for six years. As president of the Keystone Club, Burns has spearheaded several projects for the community.

He’s a member of the National Honor Society and plans to attend UMass Amherst next fall.

“He’s been an outstanding club member for a long time,” Nagy said. “He’s just one of the busiest, most hard-working kids I know.”

Kay Johnson, the Woman of the Year, is the co-founder of Billerica’s farmers market. She is also president of the 80-member Billerica Garden Club, helping to maintain gardens around the town’s center.

“She’s been nominated before, and we felt like this was her year,” said Julie Greene, a club board member and chairman of the annual dinner committee. “She does a lot of things to make the town more beautiful.”

EMD Serono is the Company of the Year.

EMD has been one of the leading corporate supporters of the club for many years — completing landscaping projects, funding improvements to the facility, and continually reaching out with new ideas to help the club and the kids.

“These guys have been incredible, donating money and labor for years,” Nagy said. “Donating money is one thing but their staff doing these projects is really spectacular.”

The group serves more than 7,000 annual meals to veterans and Billerica residents facing an economic or social need. They also serve free meals to the children at the Boys Girls Club twice a week.

“I’ve seen it firsthand, and it makes my heart swell seeing them serve the kids,” Greene said. “They’re a wonderful group of people and just want to make people happy.”

The event’s reception is at 5 p.m., followed by the dinner at 6 p.m., at 19 Campbell Road in Billerica.
